Champions Manchester City broke the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League campaign as they ran out 3-1 victors against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The home side started the brighter of the two teams and almost went ahead in the 10th minute when midfielder Ilkay Gündogan hit a goalbound effort from outside the box, but his shot was deflected.

Toure, who captained City for the first time since April 2016, almost registered an assist a minute later, but Oleksandr Zinchenko failed to convert from within the area.

Pep Guardiola’s side broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when a swift counter-attack saw Leroy Sane find defender Danilo in the area, with the Brazilian making no mistake.

The visitors were level four minutes later as Leonardo Ulloa’s header found the back of the net from Davy Propper’s ball into the area.

The Citizens continued to dominate proceedings, but were unlucky not to find the back of the net through efforts from Gundogan, Gabriel Jesus and Aymeric Laporte.

City doubled the lead in the 34th minute when Sane grabbed his second assist of the clash with a fine cross which Bernardo Silva duly slotted away.

Guardiola’s side went into the half-time break with their one-goal lead.

The second-half started in similar vein to the first with City dominating in proceedings and proving wasteful with their opportunities.

Fernandinho had a goalbound effort saved in the 55th minute following a good spell of play by City. Gündogan came close to opening his account in the 70th minute, but his shot was again blocked.

Fernandinho put the result beyond doubt two minutes later when he latched on to a corner by Sane, before firing home.

Guardiola made a number of substitutions in the latter stages of the clash to see of the game as City ran out comfortable victors.
