CCTV footage has emerged of a confrontation between Australia’s David Warner and Quinton de Kock of the Proteas.

The incident reportedly took place in the players’ tunnel at the end of the second session on day four at Kingsmead when De Kock and Aiden Markram were batting.

It’s not yet clear how the argument began, but Warner is seen exchanging a few heated words with De Kock, and had to be held back by teammates.

Cricket South Africa released a statement on Monday regarding the incident.

‘It’s rather unfortunate that the incident took place and certainly not in the spirit of the game,’ said Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee. ‘The match referee had spoken to us after the day’s play. We will await any further communication from the ICC around this incident.’

According to reports, Markram confirmed there had been words exchanged on the field. It comes on the back of the tourists requesting the stump microphones be turned down between balls.

Warner is no stranger to controversy. Five years ago, the Australia batsman and vice-captain was involved in a heated exchange with wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile in a game against South Africa A, which resulted in the umpires getting involved.

Also in 2013, Warner famously punched England’s Joe Root in a bar in Birmingham.

Australia are one wicket away from claiming victory in the first Test in Durban, while South Africa require another 124 runs.
