Welshman Geraint Thomas won the 11th stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday to claim the leader’s yellow jersey.

The Team Sky rider overtook Spaniard Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton) in the closing metres of the 108.5-kilometre stage from Albertville to the summit of La Rosiere.

Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) finished second at 20 seconds, just ahead of Sky leader and four-time champion Chris Froome.

Thomas now leads Froome by one minute and 25 seconds in the overall standings.

‘It is unreal, I didn’t expect it,’ said Thomas. ‘We were low on numbers, so it was instinct when I went. I committed, got across to Dumoulin and then sat on. It was a shame because Mikel Nieve is a nice guy but I had to go for the win.

‘It is always an honour to be in yellow. I knew it was a good chance but I didn’t know what everyone else would ride like. We were expecting attacks.

‘It is never nice to see them ride away but we had confidence in each other.’
