Dune Coetzee in 200m butterfly action

Team SA were in action across six sporting codes on day two of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires on Monday 8 October. Dune Coetzee picked up a silver medal in the women’s 200m butterfly, for Team SA’s second medal of the Games.

ARTISTIC GYMNASTSICS
Men’s rings, qualification: Ruan Lange finished 33rd in qualifying, with a total score of 44.207 points.
Men’s vault, qualification: Lange finished 14th in qualifying, with a total score of 12.516 points.
Women’s vault, qualification: Lisa Conradie finished 21st in qualifying, with a total score of 12.399 points.

HOCKEY
Women’s preliminary round, Pool A: South Africa vs Vanuata. South Africa won 11-0, with goals coming from Kayla de Waal (three), Zimkitha Weston (three), Angel Nkosi (three), Jacolene McLaren and captain Angela Welham. South Africa had won their opening match against Uruguay 4-3.

ROWING
Junior Men’s Singles Sculls: Liam Smit finished second in his opening heat in 1:43.29 and then timed 1:43.46 in his next heat. It qualified him with a combined time of 3:26.75, in 12th position and into the last 16 stage (quarter-finals).
Junior Women’s Singles Sculls: Katherine Williams completed her two heats in 1:57.93 and 1:56.45, which qualified her with a combined time of 3:54.38, in 15th position and into the last 16 stage (quarter-finals).

SPORT CLIMBING
Men’s combined, Speed qualification: David Naude finished 17th
Bouldering qualification: Naude finished 15th
Lead qualification: Naude finished 16th

SWIMMING
200m Individual Medley: Hendrik Duvenhage finished fifth in his heat in 2min 08.89sec, which placed him 15th overall but failing to qualify for the final.
100m Men’s Butterfly: Duvenhage finished sixth in his heat in 55.86sec, with placed him 30th overall but failing to qualify for the final.
200m Women’s Butterfly: SILVER! Dune Coetzee won her heat in 2:12.41 and then improved her time in the final to 2:11.71 which earned her the silver medal.
100m Men’s Breaststroke, Final: Michael Houlie finished in 1:01.70, which placed him fifth in a final won by China’s Jiajun Sun.
Women’s 4x100m medley relay, final: Team SA finished sixth in 14:17.78, with the gold medal being won by China in 4:05.18.

TRIATHLON
Men: Christiaan Stroebel finished 21st in a race won by New Zealand’s McCullough. Stroebel’s overall time was 57min 34sec, with the gold medal won in 53:27.
