Two-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic defeated John Millman in straight sets to advance to his 11th US Open semi-final at Flushing Meadows.

The scoreline might suggest that it was a walk in the park for Djokovic, but the encounter was anything but.

Djokovic broke the Australian in his very first service game to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Djokovic was presented with another four break opportunities during the opening set, but Millman saved all of them. The Aussie had a chance to break himself, but he could not take his opportunity and the Serb took the first set 6-3.

Djokovic was presented with another four break opportunities in the opening game of the second set, but yet again, Millman managed to save all of them. The Aussie though double-faulted at the worst possible time to allow Djokovic to convert a break point and serve for a two-set lead at 5-4. The Serbian did so with relative ease.

It did not take the Wimbledon champion as long to secure his first break in the third, as he managed one at the first time of asking in the third game. He had a chance to secure a double-break in the fifth, but could not take it. In the following game, Millman took advantage of some unforced errors from Djokovic to break back and level the set 3-3.

Djokovic regained the advantage by breaking in the ninth game before serving out the match to advance to his 11th semi-final at the New York grand slam with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory. He will face Juan-Martin del Potro for a place in Sunday’s final.

Earlier in the day, Kei Nishikori booked a semi-final date with Rafael Nadal after he defeated Marin Cilic in a five-set see-saw battle.

In the women’s singles, Naomi Osaka defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 to set up a semi-final clash with Madison Keys who beat Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-4, 6-3.

The other semi-final will be contested by Serena Williams and Anastasija Sevastova.
