Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare admits his side had to ‘dig deep’ to earn a point against Mamelodi Sundowns in their Absa Premiership encounter on Sunday.
The Clever Boys were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Sundowns at the Lucas Moripe Stadium as Pitso Mosimane’s side extended their unbeaten run in the league to 20 games.
Hlompho Kekana broke their deadlock for the host in the 56th minute before Keegan Ritchie cancelled out his goal with a late equaliser.
Monare, who was named Man of the Match, says he is satisfied with a point, but admits that his side should have won the game with the numerous chances they created.
‘Sometimes you have to dig deep,’ Monare told SuperSport TV after the game.
‘You are playing away. If we came here with just an ordinary performance we would not have made it.
‘Sundowns are a good side. We just had to dig deeper which we did.
‘This point will take us a long way.
‘At the end of the day I have to honour my contract and represent my club, and represent them very well. Every day from the training session you have to leave your life on the field, which I believe we did today.
‘We should have won the game looking at the chances we got but we will take the point.
‘We know if we press high we will be able to create chances. Sundowns like to play from the back and if we hit the ball there then we don’t have to do much, just a few passes and we are right at goal.
‘We couldn’t convert our chances. We will take the point.’
The Students currently occupy first place in the Absa Premiership standings with 17 points while Sundowns sit in seventh positions with 11 points – having played two games fewer than the log leaders.
