Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the Nedbank Cup last 16 following their 3-2 victory over Richards Bay at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Brazilians got off to the perfect start as they took the lead as early as the 11th minute when Peter Shalulile opened the scoring after he dinked the ball over goalkeeper Salim Magoola to find the back of the net.

Sipho Mbule had a chance to double their lead seven minutes later but his effort crashed against the woodwork from a direct free-kick.

Richards Bay were then awarded a penalty in the 27th minute after Sakhile Hlongwa as brought down in the box by Denis Onyango. Nkanyiso Zungu stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Neither side could take the lead after the half hour mark as the game went into the break locked at 1-1.

Sundowns came out guns blazing in the second half and restored their lead a minute after the restart when Mosa Lebusa headed the ball home from a Mbule corner.

The Brazilians grabbed their third goal in the 55th minute after Shalulile completed his brace with a superb finish from the edge of the area.

Sundowns opted to make a triple substitution in the 63rd minute when Andile Jali, Rushine De Reuck and Thabiso Kutumela was brought on and replaced by Mothobi Mvala, Peter Shalulile and Sphelele Mkhulise before bringing on Rivaldo Coetzee in the 79th minute in place of Lesedi Kapinga and Aubrey Modiba on for Surprise Ralani in the 84th minute.

Richard Bay managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time through Katleho Makateng but its roved to late as Sundowns held on to secure the win and book their place in the net round of the Nedbank Cup.
