France captain Kylian Mbappe says they showed they are equally capable of winning the tough, gritty contests as they are of producing moments of attacking brilliance.
The French side advanced to the quarter-finals after they secured a 1-0 victory over Paraguay at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Mbappe scored a 70th minute winner to send his side to the next round to take his goal tally to seven goals.
The French captain praised his side’s all-round display after their victory, saying they proved they can do more than just entertain with attacking football.
“We knew what sort of match we were in for, but I think today went really well,” Mbappe said.
“They thought we’d turn up in tuxedos, that we’d just come to pull off some spectacular moves.
“But we know how to play the dirty game too. And we did that today; we won, and even in that respect we were better than them.
“The way we played today showed that we’re not just a team that knows how to play attacking football.
“If we have to get our hands dirty, we’ll get our hands dirty. Sorry for the expression, but we’ve no problem with that.”
