Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has revealed that he was close to joining Orlando Pirates before making the move to Amakhosi.

The 27-year-old joined Chiefs on a free transfer in September 2020 after his former club Bidvest Wits sold their PSL status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila F.C.

However, Petersen got his Chiefs career of to a bright start following his stellar performance on his debut in their win over Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup at the start of the season.

The shot stopper admits that he could’ve been playing for Pirates after leaving Wits before then-Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt wanted his services at the Glamour Boys.

“I was at Bidvest Wits and there was obviously rumours going about that the team was going to be sold. That’s when my agent started looking around for teams,” Petersen said in an interview with his club’s official YouTube channel.

“I was set on going to Orlando Pirates because I had a guy [from the club] come to my house and we spoke about contracts and everything.

“Then coach Gavin [Hunt] called me and said that he wanted me at Chiefs but at the time, they had the [transfer] ban so we were waiting for the verdict, which was that they couldn’t sign any players.

“The season passed and halfway through coach Gavin left and coach Stuart [Baxter] came in. I had worked with coach Lee [Baxter] and he was impressed and was keen on keeping me there.
