Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals after they secured a 2-1 victory over Casric Stars at the FNB Stadium on Sunday.

The game started off slowly at the FNB Stadium as Chiefs adopted a patient strategy, searched for openings in the Casric defense as the visitors retreated to absorb early pressure.

Just before the 10th minute, the referee awarded the Chiefs a penalty kick for a handball inside the Casric penalty area.

Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net while standing over the ball and sending the opposing goalkeeper in the opposite direction.

The visiting team had difficulty getting into the game and were forced to attack Amakhosi on the break. Amakhosi did a good job of repelling the sporadic Casric counterattacks despite the fact that they faced few threats.

After taking the lead, the Chiefs struggled to move the ball upfield and spent most of their time in the middle of the field. Nonetheless, after thirty minutes, the Glamour Boys appeared relaxed.

Casric Stars created a number of opportunities toward the end of the first half, but Amakhosi entered halftime with a slender 1-0 lead intact.

Similar to the first half, Chiefs settled on the ball as soon as the second half whistle blew and launched their offensive moves from defensive positions.

At the hour mark, Casric Stars scored a goal that was completely against the run of play. Casric’s attackers forced the Chiefs’ defenders to commit errors inside their own penalty area, which resulted in them losing possession of the ball. After Brandon Petersen saved Kgomotso Mosadi’s first shot, the Casric star ensured that his second shot found the back of the net.

A minute later, Amakhosi regained the lead when second-half substitute Ashley Du Preez finished off a well-executed passing move from close range.

At the end of the 80th minute, with a one-goal advantage, Chiefs held approximately 61% of the ball possession. Since his introduction, Du Preez has been his team’s primary attacking threat for the majority of the first half.

Chiefs neutralised Casric Stars’s advances in the final third to secure a 2-1 victory at home and a spot in the quarterfinals.
