A late goal from Edson Castillo inspired Kaizer Chiefs to a 2-1 victory over Cape Town City at Athlone Stadium to advance to the semi-finals of the MTN8.

The Citizens opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through veteran defender Marc Van Heerden after he towered over the Amakhosi defence to head the ball home from a Taahir Goedeman cross.

Former City player Mduduzi Mdantsane had a chance to equalise in the 29th minute but saw his shot sail narrowly wide of the target,

Amakhosi eventually levelled matters in the 36th minute courtesy of Ashley Du Preez after the striker latched on to a ball by Mdantsane.

Tebogo Potsane was denied the opportunity to hand Chiefs the lead in the 42nd minute before Mdantsane fired his effort high and wide as the game went into the break locked at 1-1.

City showed their intent early in the second half with the first chance felling to Darwin Gonzalez but the attacker could not steer his effort towards goal in the 55th minute before Goedeman squandered his chance 10 minutes later.

Mayo had a great opportunity to restore City’s lead in the 67th minute but could not bypass Petersen before Christian Saile forced a great save out of Keet 12 minutes later.

Amakhosi had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 85th minute but Mdantsane’s effort hit the woodwork before City cleared their lines.

Chiefs pressed forward in the closing stages of the game and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Castillo scored a 94th minute winner to send Amakhosi into the semi-finals.
