Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has voiced his support for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to help officials make more accurate decisions in the fast-paced modern game.

The Brazilians secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Stade Malien thanks to goals from Khuliso Mudau, Brayan Léon and Iqraam Rayners at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday evening.

Sundowns now have a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg against Stade Malien when they meet in the return leg of the quarter-finals on March 22.

Cardoso has voiced his support for the introduction of VAR after Mamelodi Sundowns were left frustrated by refereeing decisions in their recent match.

“Absolutely, unfortunately we had Thapelo Morena injured in the situation in the last match, it was a red-card, it was not given. We saw in the last match here two situations that were taken from us or none existence of VAR,” Cardoso told SABC Sport after the game.

“Referees should be helped, the game becomes too quick nowadays, too much pressure, they need help and this is a fantastic instrument to help the referees,” Cardoso said.

“Nothing against the referees, just supporting them so that they become better like we because we also for videos.

“Everybody needs to get better and get help in the support so yes important of course.”
