Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says Mohamed Salah admitted to him that he was surprised at receiving a penalty in their 1-0 defeat to Egypt.
South Africa suffered their first defeat at the Africa Cup of Nations after falling to a narrow defeat against the Egyptians in Agadir.
One of the biggest talking points of the game was when VAR intervened to hand Egypt a penalty after Khuliso Mudau was judged to have fouled Mohamed Salah in the area.
However, Broos has since revealed that he spoke to Salah after the match and even he believed the match-winning penalty should not have been awarded.
“My opinion is that first of all first half Egypt was the better team and then second half we were the better team and the game is decided by two decisions that were not right,” Broos told the media after the match.
“The first it’s ridiculous, even Mo Salah said to me after the game that he was surprised that was a penalty and the second was a real penalty because the arm was extended on the body and the ball hit the arm,” he continued.
“But then suddenly, there’s a rule of a supporting arm what is a supporting arm so again there are so many rules now of this no penalty or penalty that people don’t know any more what to decide.”
