Benni McCarthy has reportedly proven to be a popular addition to the Manchester United coaching staff since his appointment by manager Erik ten Hag.

The 44-year-old will join the Red Devils’ first-team coaching staff as their new striker coach and be in charge of improving that department at Old Trafford.

McCarthy, who is a lifelong Manchester United fan, played for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham in the Premier League, as well as a host of other clubs in a long career. His most iconic career moment, though, came when he won the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004, while also scoring twice against United in the last 16 en route to the trophy.

The South African also had spells with Ajax, Celta Vigo and PSL outfit Orlando Pirates, as well as scoring 31 goals in 79 appearances for Bafana Bafana.

According to the Daily Mail, McCarthy has been holding extra shoot- practice sessions at the Carrington training ground after being asked by playmaker Bruno Fernandes.

It has been reported that his training sessions have become popular and a number of players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and new signing Lisandro Martines, have also joined the sessions.

However, McCarthy is yet to see the fruit of his labour after Man Utd went down 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion, with their only goal coming from a Alexis Mac Allister’s own goal.

“[I want to] help these young players, push them, change their mindset and really try to make the difference to United this season,” McCarthy told MUTV.

“Hopefully, this season we’re going to see a completely revived United, a hungry bunch of players and a team that’s going to be able to challenge to get into the Champions League and change the dynamics of the Manchester Cities and Liverpools.”
