Banyana Banyana got their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence off to a perfect start after they secured a 2-0 victory over Ghana at the Honneur Stadium in Morocco.

South Africa were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute when Noxolo Cesane was fouled inside the box after VAR reviewed the challenge.

Linda Motlhalo stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake to slot the ball home and hand Bayana a 1-0 lead.

The South African national team doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Jermaine Seoposenwe fired the ball past Ghana goalkeeper from a tight angle.

Ghana thought they had levelled matters on the hour mark, but the crossbar denied them a goal, with the rebound fired wide of the target.

Banyana Banyana held on to their lead until the final whistle to walk away with the win and all three points.

Dr Desiree Ellis’ charges are now sitting at the top of Group C with three points after their first game, while Ghana find themselves sitting at the bottom of the table.
