Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates legend John Moeti has passed away at the age of 55.

Moeti formed part of the Pirates squad that won the 19995 Caf Champions League title and was a member of the Bafana Bafana team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 55-year-old earned 29 caps for the South African national team, while also turning out for Pirates and SuperSport United, respectively.

Moeti’s family confirmed that he passed away following a long battle with illness, which they confirmed in a statement released to City Press.

“It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti,” the statement read.

“John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care.

“John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6 February) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.

“We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support.

“The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course.”
