South Africa’s Kevin Anderson suffered a shock second-round 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 defeat to American Frances Tiafoe at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Anderson claimed three victories against Tiafoe in 2018, and looked to be on his way to another when he led by a set and 3-0 in the second. But Tiafoe hit back in emphatic fashion, turning the set around before clinching single breaks in the third and fourth sets to reach the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time, where he will face Andreas Seppi.

Anderson looked to be troubled with an elbow injury, but that should take nothing away from a sterling display from Tiafoe as he went toe-to-toe with Anderson throughout, hammering 47 winners.

‘It means the world to me, I lost to him three times last year, and when I was down a set and a break it looked like it would happen again. I dug deep and went to a different place,’ the American said after his first victory over Anderson.
