Inter Miami were left frustrated after they played out to a goalless draw against Al Ahly SC in their opening Club World Cup encounter at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.
Although all eyes were on Lionel Messi, it was Jose Riveiro’s outfit that came out strong to keep the pressure on Inter as goalkeeper Oscar Ustari kept his side in the game with five saves in the first half to keep the scoreline level at 0-0.
Ustari’s moment of magic came in the 43rd minute when Zizo was brought down inside the area, and he won a penalty for the Egyptian giants.
The all-reliable Trezeguet stepped up to take the spot kick, but Ustari guessed correctly to deny the striker from the spot.
It was Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy who was called into action in the second half and did well to deal with any threats that came his way.
El Shenawy was called into action in the 51st minute when he produced a fine save to deny Tadeo Allende’s left-footed shot after he latched on to a loose ball in the area.
Messi nearly gave his side the lead in the 64th minute when he curled his free-kick towards the near post but saw his effort hit the outside netting.
The Al Ahly keeper showed his experience between the sticks when he denied Fafa Picault’s close-range header in the 85th minute before making two more saves in stoppage time to keep the scoreline at level pegging.
Neither side were able to find the winning goal, as both sides shared the spoils in the opening round of the group stages.
