Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela believes that his side are in the performing stage of their development and winning the Nedbank Cup will be a reinforcement of this, writes DEAN WORKMAN.

The Amakhosi will face Free State Stars this weekend in the semi-finals of the cup competition and stand a chance of winning their first piece of silverware of Komphela’s three-year reign.

The former Maritzburg United manager, while speaking to the media on Wednesday, explained the development stages of his process and highlighted that he believes his team are at the stage where they need to perform.

‘My first day, those who remember will tell you, we explained the development stages of any team. We said in any team formulation there is a forming stage, we have gone past that. Then there’s a storming stage, where there is the dynamics of those coming in and those who go out. Then after the storm, there is the norming stage. We have gone past the forming, storming and norming, I think Chiefs is at the performing stage now.

‘Getting results or winning trophies will be a positive reinforcement to the players. After the performing stage, it’s [the] excelling [stage] and then adjournment where the team comes to an end.

‘So, all we are trying to do is go through these stages, responsibly so, and at the end of this team formulation when it reaches adjournment then we saying what then? When the generation that we are sitting on comes to an end then we looking for the long-term plan you had, where the kids will come from the development. So, you literally have an immediate, medium and long-term plan for Chiefs.

‘We working on the process, that’s where we are. So, winning a trophy should be more of a reinforcement than redemption.’

Kaizer Chiefs will take on Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals at the Moses Mabida Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff at 8:15 pm.
