After an impressive showing in the 3-1 victory against Kaizer Chiefs, Gavin Hunt says Bidvest Wits needed to make a number of signings in the transfer market to avoid failures of the past.

The PSL champions of two seasons ago are enjoying the fruits of their labour from their new signings, who did more than their bit for the Clever Boys’ opening two league clashes.

In the 3-0 victory against Free State Stars, debutants Deon Hotto and Mxolisi Macuphu found the back of the net. Hotto continued his excellent run of form netting in Wits 3-1 victory against the Amakhosi alongside fellow new signings Terrence Dzvukamanja and Gift Motupa.

When asked about his reasons for acquiring almost another squad of players, Hunt cited their disappointing 2017-18 campaign as a factor.

‘We didn’t buy anyone except Simon (Murray, from Hibernian FC in Scotland),’ Hunt jokingly told the media prior to the Chiefs clash.

‘But in all seriousness, after what happened last season, do you not think what we have done was necessary? We learnt a hard lesson.

‘I remember when I had lunch a few years ago with Sir Alex Ferguson, he spoke about the need to refresh the team so that you don’t lose the hunger and desire.

‘What we have done this year is reduce the size of the squad by three or four. Obviously we can’t be judged on one game, but what we have done now, we should have done last season. We took too long to refresh the team and it was costly,’ he concluded.
