Spain forward Ferran Torres dedicated his World Cup final-winning goal to the entire nation after helping La Roja secure a historic victory over Argentina.

La Roja ended their 16 year wait for the World Cup trophy after they beat Argentina 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

This is the second time that Spain holds the European Championship and World Cup trophy in their history, having previously held the 2008 Euros and 2010 World Cup trophy simultaneously.

The Barcelona forward says their triumph over Argentina belonged to all 47 million Spaniards.

“I think, in the end, the goal was for 47 million people; it wasn’t just mine or from the 26 players here,” Torres told FIFA.

“I believe that today’s outcome was written in the stars. [The game] was there for us to win, far from our people, but we did our best to make them feel as close as possible.

“All finals are difficult – when Messi is on the opposition team that nervousness always creeps in – but ultimately we’ve always stuck to our guns, to playing our own brand of football, and I think today we’ve shown that once again.”
