France head coach Didier Deschamps has urged his players to approach the FIFA World Cup with humility and respect despite the high expectations surrounding Les Bleus.

The French side are scheduled to take on Senegal in their opening World Cup fixture when they meet at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Tuesday.

Les Bleus and the Lions of Teranga are placed in Group I alongside the likes of Iraq and Norway.

Deschamps stressed that success will depend on taking each challenge as it comes, insisting his side must focus on the difficult first steps before thinking about lifting the trophy.

“Every World Cup has its own story and we need to make sure this one is as beautiful as possible. Of course, as France we have a status and there is a lot of expectation around us.

“But we need to show respect and humility from the beginning. Before thinking about what is at the top of the mountain, we will need to work our way up gradually and the first steps are difficult.”
