The South African Football Association (Safa) has called on law enforcement in the country to act against any amateur footballers found playing social football during level 3 of the lockdown.

All Football in the country, from amateur to professional leagues, was suspended back in March after the outbreak of coronavirus.

The country’s top flight league, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), is now trying desperately to resume the 2019/20 season after government gave the go ahead for the professionals to return at the start of July.

However, the resumption has been delayed by disagreements between Safa and the PSL but now it looks as though football will return to action in the first week of August, but juist for the pros.

SAFA head of communications Dominic Chimhavi has confirmed the Association has been receiving many reports about football still being played at amateur level

The police have been urged to arrest people found participating in these activities while they remain restricted.

“Apart from the professional wing which is the PSL and GladAfrica Championship leagues, all other football activities are suspended,” Chimhavi tells KickOff.com.

“According to the laws of the country and presidency’s lockdown requirement, any other football activities are suspended until the situation is conducive.

“The only games that have been compromised for are PSL and GladAfrica Championship.

“The rest of the football activities, I wish to appeal through your publication to say we have been receiving reports that in certain regions people have started to engage in social football.

“We want to appeal to the police that come across people playing football, that they must be arrested.”
