Wales 'showed spirit' – Barnes

Former England star turned football pundit John Barnes has had his say on Wales’ stunning victory over Belgium in their Euro 2016 quarter-final.

According to Barnes Wales’ passion and determination made the difference for their side, despite Belgium boasting the better individuals.

‘This is a victory very much like Iceland’s victory [against England],’ Barnes said live on SuperSport. ‘This is a victory for spirit, organisation and togetherness.’

The former Liverpool winger was critical of Belgium’s approach to the game.

‘This reminded me of the Itlay game [against Spain]. Wales defended in numbers… [Eden] Hazard, [Kevin] De Bruyne, they kept dribbling. And they had three or four players around them, they’re still trying to dribble.’

Belgium took the lead early in the match through a stunning long-range strike from Radja Nainggolan before Wales hit back with goals from Sam Vokes, Hal Robson-Kanu, and Ashley Williams.

‘Doesn’t matter what individual players you have,’ Barnes continued. ‘It’s about how you play as a team.’

‘Wales should not have been allowed to get back in the game, but once they got back in the game, they showed spirit, determination, and organisation. You don’t need the best players. They were fantastic,’ he concluded.

Wales will face Portugal in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 which will be played on June 6 and June 7.
