Bidvest Wits clinched a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in their opening Absa Premiership match of the season at the Bidvest Stadium, while Ajax Cape Town drew 1-1 with Baroka at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

The first opportunity of the match came in the 13th minute when Eleazar Rodgers headed narrowly wide from 10 yards out from a Daine Klate cross.

Ten minutes later, Wits midfielder Elias Pelembe sent a low cross to find Gabadinho Mhango but saw his shot from 12 yards out fly inches wide of the target.

Gavin Hunt’s men took the lead in the 34th-minute after Pelembe headed home a cross from S’fiso Hlanti to score the opening goal of the match.

Mhango nearly extended the host lead before the half-time interval when he dribbled his way into the box, but Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was on hand to deny the forward.

Heading into the break Bidvest Wits lead the match 1-0.

Chiefs tried to find their way back into the game in the second half, but they struggled to break down a well-organised Wits defence.

The home side soon doubled their lead when Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo’s header from a Klate corner-kick  in the 65th minute.

However, Chiefs did manage to reduce the deficit to 2-1 in the 82nd minute when Lorenzo Gordinho headed home a William Twala free-kick.

Bidvest Wits managed to hold on to a 2-1 lead over Kaizer Chiefs to secure their first win at the start of the new Absa Premiership season.

Meanwhile, in another Absa Premiership matches, newly-formed Cape Town City marked their PSL debut with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Cape Town Stadium with goals from Bhongolwethu Jayiya and Aubrey Ngoma.

While, Chippa United edged out Free State Stars 2-1 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, with the home side grabbing an early lead through Rhulani Manzini in the sixth minute making it 1-0 to Chippa.

However, new Stars midfielder Charles Kampi restored parity for his side six minutes later with a great strike to level the score.

Manzini restored his side’s lead with a right-footed shot, making it 2-1 to Chippa in the 32nd minute and once again Thembinkosi Lorch provided an assist to hold on to a 2-1 victory.

Finally, Ajax Cape Town and Baroka played out a 1-1 draw following goals from Nathan Paulse and Richard Matloga.
