Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune says his side’s inability to score goals has led to their first two defeats of the 2016-17 season.

Australian midfielder Matt Sim scored the only goal of the match as Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 1-0 loss to Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarterfinal.

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper says Amakhosi has been working hard during training to improve the team’s attack in front of goal, however,  he admits that it has not panned out for them yet.

‘We just can’t score goals,’ Khune told the Kaizer Chiefs website.

‘We work a lot on finishing at training, but when it comes to match situations we can’t get it right.’

The 29-year-old says he is saddened by his side’s elimination from the Top 8 tournament but he admits that their performance wasn’t enough to secure the victory.

‘It is very sad to be knocked out of a cup competition. A big team like Chiefs deserves better, above all the supporters, who show us so much love,’ he added.

‘We tried to throw everything at City, but it was not enough to get us the result we wanted.’

Amakhosi have now suffered defeats in their Absa Premiership opener as well the MTN8 quarterfinal, the first two matches of the 2016-17 season.

However, Khune remains positive that his side will bounce back after the international break when they play Platinum Stars at the FNB Stadium on September 13.

‘We remain positive,’ the goalkeeper said.

‘We are looking forward to the next game after the Fifa break. And, on behalf of the team, I want to ask the supporters to be patient. We will continue to work hard until we get it right.’

Kick-off has been set for 19:30.
