Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned the Caf Super Cup champions following their 1-0 victory over TP Mazembe at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Congolese got off to a good start and came close breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute when Malango’s strike hit the woodwork before Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyano pushed the rebound ball onto the post.

However, Pitso Mosimane’s side enjoyed most of the possession on the ball in the opening 20 minutes of the match but could not carve out any clear-cut opportunities at goal.

The home almost opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Kham Billiat was played through on goal but Gbohou rushed off his line to deny Zimbabwean international as the score remained goalless.

The Brazilians looked threatening in the final third with the likes of Anthony Laffor and Billiat coming close with their strikes from distance.

Mazembe’s shot-stopper came to his side’s rescue in the 70th minute when he produced a fine save to deny Percy Tau’s low strike from distance.

Sundowns had another opportunity as they went in search of the opening goal in the 80th minute but Laffor’s lack of composure saw his effort guided straight at Gbohouo.

However, Sundowns were then awarded a penalty in the 81st minute when Hlompho Kekana was brought down in the area. Brazilian defender Ricardo Nascimento stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from the spot-kick.

Mosimane’s side held on to their 1-0 lead until the final whistle to claim the win and the Caf Super Cup trophy.
