South African swimmer Pieter Coetze emerged victorious in the men’s 100m backstroke to claim his first World Championship gold medal.
The South African claimed the gold medal after finishing in first place with a time of 51.85 in the final, breaking his record of 51.99 he set earlier this month at the World University Games.
Coetze has now moved up to third place among the all-time performers in the men’s backstroke.
Meanwhile, World record holder and reigning Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon claimed the silver medal in 51.90, while France’s Yohann Ndoye-Brouard claimed bronze with a time of 51.92.
