With qualification for the 2016-17 Europa League season already well underway, Lebogang Phiri’s Brondby side have edged into the third round of qualifying.

Brondby, who play in the Danish Superliga, progressed following a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Scotish outfit Hibernian following a 1-1 aggregate score in the tie. Brondby had won the away leg of the tie 1-0 back on July 14

Brondby had won their away leg of the tie 1-0 back on July 14, but were defeated by the same scoreline when they hosted the return leg on Thursday night. Nevertheless, the side held their nerve in the subsequent shootout and now face the Bundesliga’s Hertha Berlin in round three of qualifying.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Granwald Scott’s Slovan Bratislava side as they were thrashed 3-0 by Latvian side Jelgava. With the first match between the sides having ended in a 0-0 stalemate, there was everything to play for in the second-leg.  But Jelgava proved a different prospect at home as they outplayed the visitors to progress.

There was also misery for Tefu Mashamaite’s Hacken side, who were beaten 1-0 away by Cork to lose the tie 2-1 on aggregate. The Swedes simply could not unlock the Irish side’s defence as the narrow defeat ended the South African defender’s hopes of European glory.
