Khanyisa Mayo, the son of former Bafana Bafana striker Patrick Mayo, has claimed the best player gong from the Durban U19 International Football Tournament.

Mayo starred for his side has his scoring exploits led them all the way to the final, where they were eventually undone 3-1 by the defending champions Arsenal.

Mayo also claimed the Golden Boot for the tournament as the player managed to find the back of the net on six occasions in just four matches, a goal adrift of Arsenal’s Stephy Mavididi.

‘Being a top goalscorer, I wanted to step-up in this tournament to show that I can score goals for the country and myself, which I did,’ the player told KickOff.

‘I’m so proud of myself that I got the Player of the Tournament. It means a lot to me; it’s an achievement that shows I can up my game,’ he added.

The striker admitted he was disappointed to have finished runner-up in the tournament but nevertheless felt proud of his teammates.

The 17-year-old is likely to be a key player for South Africa at the Cosafa U20 Championships North West province later this year.
