Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho expressed his delight at being selected for South Africa’s U23 side taking part in the Rio Olympics in August.
The 26-year-old was one of two over-aged players named in coach Owen da Gama’s Olympic team also side his fellow Amakhosi teammate Itumeleng Khune, reports the Kaizer Chiefs website.
Mathoho insists he is honoured to be called up to represent his country at such a huge event.
‘I am over the moon,’ Mathoho said.
‘This is an opportunity of a lifetime. The Olympics is a stage that every player wishes to grace in their career.’
‘The Olympics offers one an opportunity to mix with top international athletes.’
With regard to his age and experience, Mathoho is relishing the chance to make a difference in the squad.
‘Even though age is a factor in sports, I think current trends show that even players as young as 17 can play in big leagues and teams. I am certain to make a contribution in the squad as well as learn from the experience,’ he added.
The Bafana Bafana defender has expressed his gratitude towards Chiefs, insisting that playing for a team of their calibre has given him great opportunities.
‘I am grateful for this opportunity,’ the 26-year-old defender said.
‘Playing for Chiefs has really opened doors for me and the hard work pays as well.’
During the 2015-16 season, Mathoho managed to score five goals from 36 appearances in all competitions for the Glamour Boys.
