Cape Town City moved to the summit of the Absa Premiership following their 3-2 victory over Maritzburg United at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Team of Choice broke the deadlock after just six minutes when Brian Onyango slotted home from close range after latching onto a cross from Evans Rusike.

Eric Tinkler’s side responded well and levelled matters in the 20th minute when Lehlohonolo Majoro slotted home a low strike by Thamsanqa Mkhize.

During the rest of the first half, neither sides could carve out and clear cut opportunities at goal as the scoreline remained level at 1-1 heading into the half-time interval.

However, a minute into the second half and City took the lead when Given Mashikinya picked out Sibusiso Masina with a low cross for him to calmly slotted into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

The Team of Choice then levelled matters in the 54th minute through a goal by Evans Rusike, who scored a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box.

City restored their lead in the 75th minute when Lebogang Manyama side-footed the ball into the back of the net from six-yards out from an Aubrey Ngoma cross.

Maritzburg threw numbers forward with the hope of finding an equalising goal in the closing stages of the match  but failed to carve out any clear-cut chance as City held on to for the win and walk away with all three points.
