Former Maritzburg United defender Robyn Johannes has joined Cape Town City, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old defender joins the Cape club on a two year deal and returns to the city after 16 years away.

‘I am really excited for the opportunity to be back in my home town and playing for Cape Town City,’ said Johannes after penning his new deal.

‘I have been away from Cape Town since I was 14, and to come back here was also a big desire for me.’

The defender was captain of AmaZulu last season and has also represented Maritzburg United, Golden Arrows, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and University of Pretoria.

Club owner John Comitis is pleased at securing the deal, believing his new recruit will add much needed depth in defence.

‘We needed depth in the defence and Robyn has come to pre-season extremely fit and in excellent condition,’ said Comitis.

‘You cannot deny his experience and you can see his anticipation on the field. He’s a player that has played many games in the PSL, and that’s the kind of team player you need in the squad, and in the change room.’

Cape Town City begin their PSL campaign with a home fixture against Polokwane City on August 23.
