Edwin Gyimah has finally elaborated on the controversial gesture he made towards George Maluleka during the Soweto Derby earlier this season.

The Orlando Pirates defender was pictured aiming his middle finger at Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Maluleka in the tunnel as the sides made their way out onto the field back in January.

Gyimah received a lot of criticism for the gesture, but has now insisted he meant no harm by it.

‘George is my friend from our time at SuperSport [United] and we talk a lot, but in the derby I believe that you don’t need to smile, even if someone is your friend,’ Gyimah told KickOff.

‘It is time for business, but George always wants to get into my mind by saying crazy things and telling me that I must smile and laugh instead of putting on a straight face.

‘It wasn’t my intention to respond with that finger gesture. I wasn’t even angry. It is just harmless fun between two friends.’

Gyimah made 24 appearances for Chiefs across all competitions last term as the Glamour Boys stuttered to a disappointing 5th placed finish.
