FC Cincinnati have exercised their off-season buyout of a guaranteed contract on South African midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo, the club announced on Tuesday.

The South African international joined the Orange and Blue in August 2020 from Premier League outfit Brentford and went on to 10 starts in 22 appearances across all competitions across parts of two seasons.

The 30-year-old midfielder will no longer occupy a spot on Cincinnati’s roster or count against the 2022 salary budget.

Reports on Monday claimed that Mokotjo will return to former club FC Twente of the Dutch Eredivisie, led by former FC Cincinnati head coach Ron Jans, who is the current manager of the Tukkers.

“FC Cincinnati have exercised their one offseason Buyout of a Guaranteed Contract on Kamohelo Mokotjo,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The midfielder will no longer occupy a spot on the team’s roster or count against the 2022 salary budget. Mokotjo was acquired in August 2020 and made 22 appearances, including 10 starts, in parts of two seasons with the Orange and Blue.”
