Cape Town City were crowned Telkom Knockout champions for the first time ever following their 2-1 victory over SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The match got off to a lively start in the opening exchanges of the match but it was Eric Tinkler’s side who broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Aubrey Ngoma scored with low effort from 20-yards out to make it 1-0.

Meanwhile, SuperSport got off to a slow start with the likes of Thuso Phala, Thabo Mnyamane and Reneilwe Letsholonyane struggled to make a difference in the final third.

City came close to doubling their lead just before the half-time interval but Jayiya’s headed effort was guided just wide of the upright.

The Cape Town-based side went into the half-time interval with their one -goal lead intact as United failed to carve out any real opportunities in the final third.

However, in the second half, Stuart Baxter’s side started to gain momentum and saw more possession of the ball and nearly came close to finding an equalising goal when Kingston Nkhatha and Clayton Daniels failed to find the back of the net.

In the 71st minute, SuperSport eventually levelled matters when Nkhatha was found unmarked to side-foot the ball into the back of the net from six-yards out.

However, City responded well and restored their lead soon after when Ngoma turned provider to pick out Judas Moseamedi, who headed the ball into the far corner to make it 2-1.

SuperSport pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but United were unable to convert their chances in the final third after being denied by Shu-Aib Walters.

But Tinkler’s side managed to see off United in the final closing stages of the match to clinch their first-ever Telkom Knockout Cup following their debut appearance in the knockout tournament.
