Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says that he excited at the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the Rio Olympics Games.

The Nigerian goalkeeper was selected to represent his country in Brazil, making it the second time he will represent his country at world’s biggest sporting event, having been selected in 2008, reports the Chippa United website.

‘It is a massive honour to represent my country at the Olympics,’ Akpeyi said.

‘I am very excited and am looking forward to it, but it was also important for me to join my teammates here in Port Elizabeth for the pre-season. I will not be far behind from the group when I return.’

The Nigerian national team won gold at the Olympics back in 1996, Akpeyi and his current side have big shoes to fill as they try to repeat the feat.

‘It is a massive challenge to win the Olympics and credit should go to the group that made it against all odds back in 1996. We must not forget though that we are now a different group of players and a different generation all together. The circumstances are also different,’ he added.

‘We are however as determined (as the Class of 96’) to do well in the Olympics. We do not want to go to Brazil just to make up numbers.’

‘We are there to represent the country and compete. We know that millions of people in Nigeria and Africa will be backing us to do well.’

Akpey kept seven clean sheets from 25 appearances last season is determined to do better this upcoming season.

‘I am always looking at improving as a player,’ the shot-stopper said.

‘I will be happy not to concede a single goal this season. It is a goalkeeper’s wish to never concede a goal, but most importantly I want to be part of a group of players at Chippa United that made history for the Club.

‘I am excited with the group of players that have joined us. I like the level of focus from the lads and we would like that to continue for the rest of the upcoming season.’
