In golfing parlance, there are quite a number of ‘gimmes’ when it comes to predicting outcomes of English Premiership matches this weekend, writes GARY LEMKE.

As much as upsets are part and parcel of sport, it’s hard to see that any of the form teams are going to come unstuck in round 23, where the stand-out fixture is undoubtedly Chelsea’s visit to Arsenal. In the reverse fixture last August, Chelsea roared into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes before the Gunners roared back and levelled things at 2-2 by half-time. It took Marcos Alonso’s 81st minute winner to separate the sides, and from that point on Chelsea have held a slight advantage through the season.

The Blues lie fourth on the table, with Arsenal fifth on goal difference, ahead of Manchester United six points behind on 41 apiece. With a resurgent United flying at the moment under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and with what appears to be a routine victory over Brighton looming this weekend, United fans will be relishing the fact that either one, or both Arsenal and Chelsea are going to be losing points to them. Should Chelsea win, then they will still be six points ahead of United, with Arsenal three behind that. Should the match be a draw, then United should be up to fifth and only four ahead of Chelsea, and should Arsenal win, United will be three behind a place in the Champions League race.

United’s game against Brighton is obviously one of the three-point ‘gimmes’ expected. The others look to be leaders Liverpool at home to Crystal Palace, and Manchester City’s trip to bottom club Huddersfield. Similarly, Tottenham are away to struggling Fulham, and despite missing the services of Harry Kane (injured) and Son Heung-min (on Asian Cup duty), they should be too strong for their London rivals.

It’s still fresh in the memory how David De Gea made 11 second-half saves to allow United to hold on for their crucial 1-0 victory at Wembley last weekend, and even while Kane and Son are absent, Tottenham could go to town against the leakiest defence in the division.

Newcastle have again slipped into the relegation zone, and manager Rafa Benitez is pulling out what’s left of his hair trying to secure transfer funds, but even so there should be enough home support and atmosphere for the Magpies to see off fellow strugglers Cardiff.

As you can see below, the three most common scorelines of the season – 2-1, 1-0 and 2-0 – are starting to stretch away from the 3-1, which we saw a lot when the winter hadn’t settled as much as it has, while the 0-0 has crept up to be two results behind the 1-1s. There will be more goalless draws in the next month or two, given the weather conditions, and the bold Superbru punter, going for that draw instead of the 1-1, will climb up in their groups as reward.

The most common scorelines so far this season are:

39 times: 2-1
33 times: 1-0, 2-0
24 times: 3-1
17 times: 1-1
15 times: 0-0
11 times; 3-0
10 times: 3-2, 2-2
7 times: 4-0
5 times: 4-1, 4-2
4 times: 5-1
3 times: 5-0
2 times: 6-1
1 time: 6-2, 3-3
