Ottis Gibson took the Proteas up Table Mountain for a team-building exercise, likening the journey to what his players will experience at the World Cup.

The Proteas will play nine teams in the tournament, starting with the hosts England on 30 May.

Their journey as a unit already started with their team-building session in Cape Town.

With the return of their players from the IPL, the side embarked on a trip up Table Mountain, a perfect exercise that Gibson compared to their World Cup campaign.

Gibson started his speech as the Proteas neared the top, with one more stretch to climb. Rassie van der Dussen compared the moment in time to the Proteas being seven games in.

The Proteas coach saw it as the perfect moment to draw parallels to what’s to come  during their six-week World Cup experience.

‘I can see some of us are looking up there, you can see the top already and reaching, we’re going quicker,’ said Gibson. ‘As soon as we reach, we start to get out of our bubble, maybe a mistake slips in somewhere. You still have to stay focused and connected to the journey all the way through.’

Once the Proteas reached the top, he gave another compelling speech.

‘This to me signifies what the journey’s all about, and the World Cup will be the same,’ he added.

‘All in all, the efforts that you guys have gone through now, these are the things that have led me to believe for a long time now that we are on the verge of doing something really special as a group.’

The Proteas kick off their World Cup journey at The Oval on 30 May against England.
