Test captain Faf du Plessis has revealed wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock’s elevation to the T20I captaincy is not a full-time appointment.

Du Plessis was not included in the squad for September 2019’s three T20Is in Dharamsala, Mohali and Bengaluru. De Kock, who has captained the ODI team twice, will instead lead the T20I XI.

‘Cricket South Africa are going to use opportunities through the season to bring in different captains in white-ball cricket to prepare for when I’m going to be done after the T20 World Cup next year,’ the Mumbai Mirror quoted Du Plessis as saying.

‘I’m still the captain of the T20I team and very much part of it.’

The uncapped Bjorn Fortuin, Anrich Nortje and Temba Bavuma have been named in the 14-man touring party, too. Lions spinner Fortuin has not played international cricket, while fast bowler Nortje and batsman Bavuma have been capped at ODI level. Bavuma has also played Test cricket.

‘I would like to stress that Faf remains an important part of our plans for white-ball cricket,’ added CSA acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl.

‘As far as the T20 squad is concerned, Temba and Bjorn were two of the standout players in the CSA T20 Challenge last season, while Nortje was outstanding in the Mzansi Super League until ruled out by injury.’
