The Proteas will continue to take the knee this season, Cricket South Africa has confirmed.

This followed a meeting between a board delegation, led by chair Lawson Naidoo, the team captains and team management on Tuesday night.

According to CSA, the captains and team management are firmly behind the gesture and in full support of the board’s directive and guidance.

“The decision to engage the players on the gesture of taking the knee was not taken lightly and we are delighted that we had the opportunity to engage with the captains and that this has now been accepted as a matter of principle,” said Naidoo.

“The gesture is an important stance in articulating an unequivocal determination against discrimination in sports and in society, and one in which South African sportsmen and women should be taking the lead.”

Earlier this month, Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma said the team would make a “collective” decision on whether to continue taking the knee and that Test captain Dean Elgar would be brought into the conversation.

Bavuma said the gesture should be about how people internalise the Black Lives Matter movement.

“The important thing for me is how does this translate to our every day, that’s the cream on top for me.

“We can all go out there and raise our fists or go on our knee but if deep down in the heart you’re not for the cause and what it stands for and it doesn’t show in everyday behaviour, then it brings into question the authenticity.”
