The Proteas piled on the runs on day one of their second tour match against South Australia XI in Adelaide thanks to centuries from Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis.

The tourists continued their impressive preparations ahead of next week’s first Test against Australia, backing up the 415 they scored on day one against a Cricket Australia XI last week with a massive 439. Ironically, they were bowled out on the penultimate ball of the day both times.

Elgar was in fine touch, hitting 117 which included 12 fours and four sixes in a 179-run stand with skipper Du Plessis, who was out on 102.

Quinton de Kock, who blasted 122 in the first match, followed that up with 99 off 94 balls, continuing his excellent form going into the three-match series, which starts in Perth on Thursday.

There were also handy contributions from Temba Bavuma (43) and Vernon Philander (41), but Stephen Cook might be a bit concerned about his form going through to the WACA; he now has scores of five, 12 and 0.

The bowlers will look to tuck into the local batting lineup on Friday morning, as they get their final run-around before the Test series starts.
