Aiden Markram scored a half-century on debut, but backed that up with great fielding and bowling, picking up two wickets for the Proteas against Bangladesh.

The 23-year-old  followed his 97 on his Test debut with a 66 on his ODI debut and it seems as though he has slotted into the national side with ease. Not only did he show his ability with the bat, but he showed his talent in the field and with the ball.

The ex-SA U19 captain is an off-breaker and has 14 wickets in 14 innings in List-A cricket and took 2-18 against Bangladesh on debut which helped the Proteas bundle out the visitors for 169, and claim a 200-run victory.

Talking to the media in East London on Sunday, Markram showed his interest in bowling.

‘It’s something I do work on, probably not hard enough. But it’s something that I do see myself doing in the future and having a role to play,’ he said.

‘I’m definitely going to keep working hard at it and then hopefully one day it’s good enough to do a job for a side.’

Despite being a specialised opening batsman, he was asked to bat in unfamiliar territory at No 4.

‘I was quite nervous walking out to the middle. Batting No 4 is something that is quite foreign to me,’ he said. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed. To make your debut in any format is nice. It’s a day I’ll certainly remember.’

Markram is currently playing for the Titans in the Jukskei derby at the Wanderers.
