Faf du Plessis has been released from the Proteas’ extended squad to rest and will not take part in the upcoming ODI series against England.

The former Proteas skipper, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year, competed in the recent T20I series against Eoin Morgan’s men and also had a solid IPL campaign with the Chennai Super Kings prior to that.

Cricket South Africa on Thursday announced a number of changes to its squad for the three-match ODI series against England, which gets under way on Friday.

As previously announced, Kagiso Rabada has left the Proteas bio-bubble to begin rehabilitation after sustaining a right-adductor strain.

Pite van Biljon, Reeza Hendricks and Bjorn Fortuin have also been released to their respective unions to compete in the ongoing 4-Day Franchise Series.

Both Van Biljon and Hendricks made appearances in the T2oI series defeat by the visitors, while Fortuin wasn’t used at all.
