The Mzansi Super League is set to expand by adding two new teams for the third edition of South Africa’s new flagship domestic T20 competition.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Cricket South Africa is negotiating with SuperSport to secure the broadcasting rights for the competition with highlight reels to be given to previous broadcaster SABC.

The state broadcaster aired the competition at no cost for the opening two seasons after SuperSport decided not to obtain the rights due to contract misunderstandings between themselves and CSA.

It resulted in a massive loss of income for CSA with every match broadcasted for free on SABC in the process.

The two new teams, reportedly from Bloemfontein and East London, are expected to lead to a new structured and limited draft of players, while the addition of those teams will boost the governing body’s attempts of strengthening the country’s domestic system.

Should cricket in South Africa resume after Covid-19, then the event will again take place in December, with the Paarl Rocks, under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis, out to defend their title.
