Former Proteas star batsman Herschelle Gibbs has stated on Twitter that he would have preferred to play career rugby instead of cricket.

Gibbs responded to a video posted on Wednesday morning from his high-school rugby days when he played in the 1992 Craven Week final for Western Province against the Free State at Loftus in Pretoria.

The 18-year-old Gibbs showcased plenty of talent and skill on the field, while his early rugby-playing ability has often been highlighted in the past.

He would also go on to represent the South African schools team in rugby, as well as cricket and soccer.

In response to the video, he said: ‘If it was up to me rugby would have been my choice. Best team sport imo.’

Gibbs would go on to become one of the greatest South African batsmen ever, playing 90 Test matches and 248 ODIs to accumulate more than 14,000 international runs.
