The ICC have named their Protea-less Champions Trophy Team of the Tournament, led by Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed.

A panel of selectors, which included Michael Atherton (England),  Sourav Ganguly (India), Ramiz Raja (Pakistan), as well as Lawrence Booth (Editor, Wisden Almanack and cricket writer, The Mail) and Julian Guyer (cricket correspondent, Agence France-Presse), with ICC General Manager – Cricket, Geoff Allardice, as chairman.

The team was based on performances throughout the tournament, not only based on the stats of individuals.

Team of the Tournament Champions Trophy 2017:

1) Shikhar Dhawan (India) (338 runs),

2) Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan) (252 runs),

3) Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh) (293 runs),

4) Virat Kohli (India) (258 runs),

5) Joe Root (England) (258 runs),

6) Ben Stokes (England) (184 runs and three wickets),

7) Sarfraz Ahmed (Pakistan) (captain) (wicketkeeper) (76 runs and nine dismissals),

8) Adil Rashid (England) (seven wickets),

9) Junaid Khan (Pakistan) (eight wickets),

10) Bhuvneshwar Kumar  (India) (seven wickets),

11) Hassan Ali (Pakistan) (13 wickets),

12) Kane Williamson (New Zealand (12th man – 244 runs)

Achmed was excellent at turning his side’s fortunes around, after they lost their opening match to India. They went on to win their remaining games, including the final, beating India by 180 runs. This was vital to his selection as captain of the side.

Zaman, who scored 252 runs in four matches, was preferred over Rohit Sharma, who ended as the tournament’s second-highest run scorer, with 304 runs.

Hazlewood, who finished second on the wicket-taking list with nine scalps, was also left out of the side.
