Australia have included three uncapped bowlers in their squad for the five-match ODI series against the Proteas in South Africa.

Speedsters Chris Tremain, Joe Mennie and Daniel Worrall have all been selected for the 15-man squad, as well as for the preceding ODI against Ireland. With John Hastings and Scott Boland looking to lead the attack, the new editions will add an unexpected element to their line-up. The newbies impressed in their Sheffield Shield campaigns, where they occupy three spots in the top-five wicket-takers in the tournament, as well as having outstanding performances with Australia A.

Besides Starc and Hazlewood, Australia are missing three of their most experienced ODI quicks for the clash against the Proteas. James Pattinson and Pat Cummins are still undergoing rehabilitation for shin and back issues respectively, while Nathan Coulter-Nile is out with a bone stress injury in his back, which caused him to miss the Tests and ODIs in Sri Lanka.

Australia are also missing some young talent: Jason Behrendorff (back), Joel Paris (shin) and Sean Abbott (ankle) are still in rehab.

National Selector Rod Marsh was full of praise regarding the decision to include the new players.

‘Chris, Joe and Daniel all had terrific summers last year and have also impressed us during the recent Australia A series with consistent performances.

‘They are young players with a bright future who thoroughly deserve their selection and we look forward to seeing them work with John Hastings and Scott Boland, who have both performed well for Australia since returning from injury.’
