Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini could be set for a spell on the sidelines following a severe back injury.
Fellaini suffered the injury in his side’s late victory over Hull City and manager Jose Mourinho stating the player is likely to be absent for some time.
‘I am going to lose Fellaini for a while. He has a muscle injury in his back and it is not good,’ Mourinho told the press, reports Sky Sports. ‘I don’t like to say that but it is bad.’
The injury has come as somewhat of a surprise given the Belgian had played the full 90 minutes of United’s victory over Hull.
Fellaini has often split opinion at Manchester United, with many fans not convinced by the star’s showings for the side. Nevertheless, Mourinho had moved to defend Fellaini, calling him an important component of the side.
With club football coming to a halt for two weeks for the international break, Mourinho has revealed Fellaini will still travel to link-up his national side to be examined by their own medical team.
‘I think he has to go. They have to look at him but he has to travel,’ the Portuguese explained.
Manchester United’s next clash sees them face city rivals Manchester City in a blockbuster top of the table derby.
The match will be played on Saturday, September 10.
Kick-off is at 13:30.
