Argentina captain Lionel Messi admits his missed penalty was a difficult moment but insists the team’s remarkable recovery made him even prouder to lead the squad.
Lionel Scaloni advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after they came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Egypt at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Argentina will be looking to book their place in the semi-finals when they face Switzerland at the Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
Messi praised his side’s resilience after their dramatic World Cup comeback, saying their fighting spirit defined the team’s character.
“What this squad did was incredible,” Messi told FIFA.
“Coming back from 2-0 down in a knockout match, especially at a World Cup that has already produced so many surprises, says everything about this team.
“This squad keeps fighting and never gives up. It was a huge relief for everyone.
“That penalty miss hurt, but the comeback showed our character and made me even prouder to be part of this group.”
